The latest version of Xiaomi’s custom Android skin – MIUI 12 – is finally here. The company has dropped the curtain yesterday, alongside the Mi 10 Youth Edition launch event in China. Compared to MIUI 11, the stable version of which was released less than six months ago, MIUI 12 brings in a slew of improvements, visual overhauls, and many new features. We have already extracted the new wallpapers, and now we are presenting the downloading links of the first set of MIUI 12 beta firmware packages for a bunch of Xiaomi and Redmi devices.

It is worth mentioning that these closed beta builds are meant for the Chinese variants, as Xiaomi suspended the rollout of MIUI global beta since last year. As a consequence, you have to flash these recovery ROMs using TWRP to bypass the MIUI beta account whitelisting. Do not expect Google Play Services or any pre-installed Google apps in them. Language options are likely limited to English and Chinese only, too. Xiaomi did launch MIUI 12 globally, and we are waiting for builds to appear for that too. Meanwhile, you can try out the closed betas from China.

The beta MIUI 12 builds listed below are based on either Android 10 or Android 11, depending on the device. If you are looking for MIUI 12 stable releases, you can find those here.

You can download the latest beta of MIUI 12 for your device from the links below. You can also visit our linked forums in case you need further assistance. While all of these download links are directly from Xiaomi, users are advised to proceed at their own risk. We warn you once again, this is not intended for the average consumer and is recommended only for users comfortable with flashing ROMs.

Discord is preparing to add screen sharing on Android

Discord’s Android client has grown increasingly feature-rich over the years, with the company adding useful improvements to the app from time to time. In its last few updates, the app has added support for QR code logins, the ability to temporarily mute certain conversations, support for slash commands, Mobile Voice Overlay, and more. In the most recent update, Discord even rolled out a noise suppression feature to help users filter out background noise for a better calling experience. Now, the company is preparing to add new functionality that will allow users to share their Andriod device’s screen with friends.

An APK teardown can often predict features that may arrive in a future update of an application, but it is possible that any of the features we mention here may not make it in a future release. This is because these features are currently unimplemented in the live build and may be pulled at any time by the developers in a future build.

Strings have been spotted in the latest Canary release of Discord’s desktop client that gives us an idea of how this new screen sharing feature will work. Following are the new strings within the Discord Canary build 66173:

MOBILE_STREAM_ACTIVE_HEADER: "You’re sharing your screen!"
MOBILE_STREAM_ACTIVE_BODY: "You can switch to other apps for your friends to see."
MOBILE_STREAM_ACTIVE_BODY_SOUNDSHARE_WARNING_ANDROID: "You can switch to other apps for your friends to see. The latest version of Android is required for your audio to be shared."
MOBILE_STREAM_STOP_SHARING: "Stop sharing"

The feature appears to be pretty self-explanatory. When you’re in a video call, you can start the screen sharing and have your phone’s display streamed to your friends. You’ll be able to switch to other apps and let your friends see what’s on your screen. This will be really handy for troubleshooting scenarios. The screen sharing is already available for desktop users, so it’s good to see the work is already underway to bring it to the mobile client as well.

It’s unlikely this feature will be released to the masses soon, given that it hasn’t yet arrived in the beta channel. We’ll be keeping a close eye on this development and will sure to let you know if we find anything worth sharing.

Watch Samsung Galaxy Unpacked Part 2 here LIVE!

Samsung hosted the first Galaxy Unpacked 2020 earlier this year to launch the Galaxy S20 series, and then the second Unpacked event was hosted last month to launch the Galaxy Note 20 and Galaxy Note 20 Ultra, the Galaxy Tab S7 and Tab S7+, the Galaxy Buds Live, the Galaxy Watch 3, and gave us just a quick look at the Galaxy Z Fold 2. Samsung didn’t reveal everything about the device, like its final specification and pricing (but we could confirm several specs thanks to our sources), so the South Korean company is coming back for a round 2 to finish the job. Samsung will be streaming the Galaxy Unpacked Part 2 event, and if you’ve been thinking of tuning in, we’ve got all the details for you!

The Galaxy Unpacked Part 2 event will take place on Tuesday, September 1, 2020 (today). Here’s the kick-off time in your region:

• West Coast: 7 am Pacific
• East Coast: 10 am Eastern
• UK: 3 pm British Standard Time
• India: 7:30 pm Indian Standard Time
• China: 10 pm China Standard Time

The event will be live-streamed on Samsung’s website and you can also catch the event from the YouTube stream. In case you don’t wish to miss the live stream, you can also set a reminder on the company’s website or on YouTube and you’ll be notified when the live stream goes online.

Here’s the live stream:

What can we expect at Samsung Galaxy Unpacked Part 2?

Unlike the Galaxy Unpacked event of last month where we had multiple devices to unveil officially, Unpacked Part 2 has a narrower focus: the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2. We expect Samsung to officially reveal all of its specifications, talk about the design improvements and the R&D process that they have undertaken for the new foldable, and then focus on the pricing and availability details for the premium smartphone. We also expect them to introduce a Thom Browne edition that several leaks in the past have shown off — but don’t expect it to be cheap by any means.

We already have a very good idea on what to expect from the Galaxy Z Fold 2, in case you want some spoilers beforehand, and we already know the price thanks to early pre-orders in the UK.

OnePlus explains how they optimized OxygenOS 11 for better one-handed use

It won’t be long after Google rolls out the stable Android 11 release for Pixel phones that OnePlus rolls out the final version of OxygenOS 11 for its devices. Earlier this month, the company unveiled the latest version of its Android-based software and rolled out a beta for the OnePlus 8 series. Alongside a new beta release today, OnePlus took to its forums to explain how they came up with the new design language for OxygenOS 11.

In the post, OxygenOS Product Lead Gary C. explained how OnePlus analyzed data to design a system that’s more comfortable for one-handed use. The company says they conducted A/B testing and found that 65% of users prefer slightly smaller headlines while 80% of users prefer titles with subtitles rather than without. In accordance with these metrics, OnePlus designed a new “headline-body hierarchy that streamlines information delivery in OxygenOS 11.” Furthermore, the company looked at anthropometric data to determine the general regions of the screen where people can easily reach or struggle to reach, as shown below.

As a result, OxygenOS 11 moves touch controls closer to your thumbs for easier access. When you open a menu, settings will now be pushed to the lower half of the display. “We also wanted to add even more features to make one-handed use quicker and easier,” OnePlus said in a forum post. “So, for example, we added a new Quick Share button in the Camera app. Now you can long press the thumbnail of the last photo you took to quickly share the photo with just one motion.” The company also redesigned its Weather app based on these principles, with the new UI currently rolling out in beta.

The changes to OxygenOS 11 come in response to the current mobile landscape, which is flooded with devices that feature tall screens. While big displays are great for content consumption, they do present usability issues with people who have smaller hands.

Samsung made similar design changes in its One UI software, which made the company’s taller phones much easier to use by placing key interaction areas near the bottom of the screen. Even if OxygenOS 11 does take inspiration from Samsung, it’s still nice to see that better one-handed use is becoming more of a priority.

Lenovo Smart Clock Essential is a $49 multipurpose clock with Google Assistant

If you’re having trouble waking up for work or the new school year, then Lenovo’s new Smart Clock Essential can help. The company on Monday introduced the new Google Assistant-powered digital alarm clock, which is a cheaper version of the Lenovo Smart Clock from 2019. The Lenovo Smart Clock Essential introduces a handful of new features, including a night light and USB port for charging devices.

The Lenovo Smart Clock Essential features what looks like an LED display that shows information such as time, day, temperature, and whether you have an alarm set. Speaking of alarms, users can now use buttons to set an alarm, in addition to voice. There’s a mic mute switch and buttons for play/pause, volume up/down, and night light, a previously mentioned.

You can also use the Smart Clock Essential to control your smart home network using Google Assistant. That includes turning off/on smart lights and streaming music through the device’s 3W 1.5-inch speaker. You can also group the Smart Clock Essential with other compatible smart speakers for a more immersive listening experience.

The original Lenovo Smart Clock was more of a tiny smart display, similar to the Nest Hub, than an actual bedside clock. The latest Smart Clock Essential appears to function more like an old school alarm clock, complete with old school alarm clock looks, but with Google Assistant smarts. Sometimes, that’s all you need.

The Lenovo Smart Clock Essential retails for $49, which is about the price of a Google Nest Home Mini ($59). If you want the extra clock functionality, Lenovo’s new device might be the way to go. You can pick up the Smart Clock Essential in September. It’ll be available in the U.S., Europe, and several other regions, including Latin America, Australia and New Zealand, Japan, Taiwan, Indonesia, Vietnam, India, Malaysia, Thailand, Philippines, Singapore, Hong Kong, South Korea, and China.
